In November 2023, HIBAR-B hosted a webinar with 7 UBC graduate students involved in Highly Integrative Basic And Responsive (HIBAR) projects from a variety of different research fields.
Each speaker had several minutes to introduce their project and involved partners, followed by a Q+A session to address questions from attendees.
Each of the students shared their passion for being able to do the work they feel strongly about in a direct fashion, with key stakeholders from outside the university directly involved from the beginning of the research process. Each speakers described some of the challenges associated with this type of research, such as complex timelines involving non-university parties, and difficulties finding flexible funding, which affects all students regardless of faculty affiliation. All students felt that the benefits of targeting social issues while in partnership with community partners added a particularly positive impact in how the research projects took shape.
